What I read this month: January and February 2019

I read mainly fantasy during the winter months because it’s really gloomy and depressing outside. I finished only three books in January and February. This year I got back to my bad habit of starting five books at the same time and the number of completed books each month will probably vary a lot.

1. Vicious by V.E. Schwabthree stars

Page number: 400

Publication date: September 2013

Translated in Bulgarian: no

This is the first V. E. Schwab novel that I read. She has another two very popular series. I was interested in Vicious because its sequel Vengeful just came out, it’s all over the Internet. Vicious tells the story of two university roommates who experiment with death and end up with supernatural powers. They become villains and eventually turn against each other. The reviews promised a unique story, but I disagree. Vicious is a cross between the TV show Heroes and Interview with The Vampire. I can definitely tell how talented Schwab is and I would read more of her books. I already bought Vengeful and I’ll soon read it.

2. Peace is Every Step : The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life by Thich Nhat Hanhthree stars

Page number: 134

Publication date: March 1992

Translated in Bulgarian: yes

This book was highly recommended to me as one of those reads that leaves you feeling calmer and at peace with yourself. Thich Nhat Hanh has written a lot of books and he’s an inspiration as a person. Peace in every step is about practicing mindfulness in everyday life. I enjoyed the book and learned some interesting facts and metaphors from it, but I wasn’t as impressed as I expected to be. Another thing I didn’t like is that he is constantly pushing his culture is superior to others.

3. The Wicked King by Holly Blackfive stars

Page number: 336

Publication date: January 2019

Translated in Bulgarian: no

I haven’t been as excited about a book series since the Harry Potter books. I liked The Wicked King even more than the first book The Cruel Prince (more here). I don’t enjoy reading about toxic relationships in general, but Jude and Cardan are just fascinating. The third book comes out in the beginning of 2020 and the only thing we know about it is the title Queen of Nothing.
